  The Vieijra Family from Faro, Algarve, Portugal, c.1622 Also spelled Vieira or Vieyra The name probably derives from a place name such as Vieira de Leiria. It could also be a contraction of Oliveira. Vieira is the Portuguese word for shell or escallop. Faro, is the principal town of the Algarve, Portugal. The earliest recorded member of this branch, Francisco alias David VIEIJRA, left Portugal and settled in Amsterdam. He was married in Amsterdam in 1646. His son Joseph was born in Hamburg in 1653 and his daughter Rebecca in 1664. His daughter Judith died in Amsterdam in 1666 so the family appears to have spent several years in Hamburg before returning to Amsterdam. The Dutch Republic became known for its relative religious tolerance. Jews from the Iberian Peninsula, Huguenots from France, prosperous merchants and printers from Flanders, and economic and religious refugees from the Spanish-controlled parts of the Low Countries found safety in Amsterdam. Amsterdam is the capital and largest city of the Netherlands, located in the province of North Holland in the west of the country. Its name is derived from Amstellerdam, indicative of the city's origin: a dam in the river Amstel. 14th.
