- The early Barzilays in the Netherlands
As you'll read in the next chapter, we can surely say that our ancestors came from Venice to Amsterdam in the 18th century. How they did get to Venice, be it from Purtugal or from the Netherlands is unknown. In the previous chapter you can read that under the influence of the prosecutions in the 16th century Jews from Iberia fled both to Venice as to safe countries like Brazil and Holland. One of the people that came to Amsterdam via Brazil and France was Helena Nunes, who in 1615 still lived with her children Simão, Joao and Abigael in the French town Saint Jean de Luz, near the Spanish border. She was the widow of Antonio Rodigues from Trancoso, Brazil. That she lived as a widow in France can be read from the deed of the Portuguese community in Amsterdam, in which a cousin of Helena or her deceased husband stands secure for the dowry of her daughter Abigael. This cousin, Pascoal Lopas alias David Nahemias sent in 1617 a ship "Het Blauwe Paert" of captain Pieter Dircx Cock from Broek in Waterland through Texel to Saint Jean de Luz in order to get the family and their belongings. In Amsterdam Helena converted to the Jewish religion (again) under the name of Sara Barzilay. Her sons were called Abraham and Jacob. Both are ancestors of a large family. Several members of the family went to Venice. If any of our ancestors were among them may become clear in the future.
Cousin Pascoal Lopes alias David Nahemias was in 1618 witness at making up the wedding deed of Abigael Barzilay and her future spouse Benjamin Touro alias Duarte Fernandes Veiga. Benjamin lived in Rotterdam, Abigael with her family on the distinguished Leprozenburgwal (= a part of the Houtgracht, the current Waterlooplein).
Cousin Pascoal traded via Lisbon with Livorno and left around 1625 with his family to that latter city. Later we find in Venice a possible son of his: Samuel Nahemias (1612-1687).
By her marriage with benjamin Touro Abigael came in the possession of her fathers portion of the inheritance. One of father's brothers, Pedro Rodrigues, who lived in Trancoso took care of this. A few years later he came to Amsterdam himself, where he lived under the name of Tobiau Barzilay.
From the will that Tobiau made up in 1624 in Amsterdam (he died in 1625) we can make up that he was widower of a daughter of Belchior Mendes alias Abraham Franco from Porto, who was the founding-father of the very distinguished and well-to-do family Franco Mendes. From his marriage Pedro took along two daughters: Ester and Rachel Barzilay. Two cousins, Abraham and Jacob Barzilay also shared in the inheritance of their uncle.
Abraham (Simão) Barzilay married in 1635 with Rachel Machabeo, born c1605 in Toulouse, and in that same year Abraham lived on the Houtgracht. We can't find anything about their death in the Netherlands, so it might very well be possible that they both have left to Venice.
Jacob Barzilay (c1596-1666) carried an alias João Rodrigues Nunes, a combination of the two names of his parents. In those days in Spain and Portugal there were no famly names, which makes it very difficult to do research. An example: Jacob Barzilay's daughter Ester Barzilay (*c1628) marries in 1655 in Amsterdam with Aron Benveniste alias Gregorio Mendes de Leão (*c1620 Rio de Janeiro). See the marriage certificate. He was a son of Duarte Ramires de Leão (alias Benjamin Benveniste) from Lisbon . The maiden names of his sisters were Branca Henriques and Isabel Gomes da Costa and his brother was called Domingos Rodrigues Ramires!
By the way, as early as the beginning of the 17th century there lived some Benvenistes in Venice. Also Jacob's sister Ester Jessurun stayed there with her spouse (Moses Munhao) and children.
That some Barzilays have lived in the Italian city of Capua becomes clear from a bearth in 1786 in Amsterdam of a daughter of Daniel Barzilay of Capua and Rachel Cardozo de la Penha
A possible daughter-in-law of Helena Nunes was Isabel Mendes from Portalegre, Portugal. We know of two childern of her, i.e. a daughter Lea Barzilay (*c1594 Portalegre), married in 1635 te Amsterdam with Mendo Lopes Carneiro, and a son Isaac Barzilay (*c1595 Portalegre). He also traded with Sale and Brasil (amongst others with Jacob Barzilay), but it is unknown whether he was married or had any children.
About the foremother of the Portalegr branch, Isabel Mende, is little known so far. Isabel Mendes lived in 1635 on Vlooienburg, in the Lange Houtstraat and possibly had another son besides Isaac. This Benjamin (Manuel) Barzilay lived in Brasil in the period from 1648-1654. He was married, had a daughter (no sons) and died in 1667 in Amsterdam.
But - for all clarity - it is by no means certain that any of these Barzilays were our forefathers. Let' s talk about them in the next chapter.
