    • Josef Pereira was a member of the Neve Shalom community, of which he was the parnas in 1624 and 1625. In addition he had been a member of the Dotar since its foundation in 1615 and in 1622 he was its administrator. In 1623 he discovered that his Jewish surname was Abendana, and from then on he called himself Josef Abendana. He was administrator of Bet Haim and secretary of the Impost Board. He traded mainly with Levant and Portugal. Around the year 1620 he went to Venice to attend personally to his affairs there. It would appear that he had his own ships: according to a deed in 1628 he had a share in the ship "H. Miguel" (Mun. Arch. Amsterdam Not. Arch. 636 fol. 151). The exact date of his death is not known, but must have been between 1642 and 1667.
    • The Lopes/Dias Homem/Abendana Family from Ponte de Lima, Portugal c.1519.
Ponte de Lima is a town in the district of Viana do Castelo, Portugal, named after the long medieval bridge that passes over the Lima river.

Miguel 'Francisco' LOPES HOMEM is recorded as being from Ponte de Lima and it has been assumed that his parents and siblings were also from there.

ABENDANA: The name of a number of Spanish and Portuguese Jewish (Sephardic) families in Amsterdam and London. The first person to assume it was the Marano Francisco Nuñez Pereyra, who fled from Spain through dread of the Inquisition at the beginning of the seventeenth century and settled in Amsterdam, where he married his cousin Justa Pereyra. The children born of this marriage died, and, their death being attributed by his wife to the fact that he had not been received into the Covenant of Abraham, they separated until that rite was performed. He took the name David Abendana, and was one of the founders of the first synagogue in Amsterdam. He died Feb. 14, 1625. He left two sons, Manuel and Abraham. Manuel was Hakam of the Amsterdam congregation and died June 15, 1667, having contributed much to the spiritual edification of his brethren. - (from The Jewish Encyclopedia)

There is no actual proof of the existence of Jews in Amsterdam before the latter half of the sixteenth century, though the probability is strong that some lived there earlier. When Holland joined the Union of Utrecht (1579), which, among other provisions, forbade persecution on religious grounds, the Maranos in Portugal fixed their hopes on Amsterdam, and, according to Franco Mendes and Graetz, the first Maranos settled there in 1593. They were Manuel Lopez Pereira, his sister Maria Nunez, and her uncle Miguel Lopez. Their voyage had not been prosperous; they were first captured by English pirates and taken to London. They again set sail for Amsterdam, only to be flung by a storm upon the coast of East Friesland at Emden. Thence the Rabbi Moses Uri Levi (born 1544) helped them on to Amsterdam, and followed them shortly in order to receive them back into Judaism. Soon thereafter other Jews came from Portugal, mainly relatives of these first comers. - (from The Jewish Encyclopedia)

Maria NUNEZ: daughter of the Portuguese Marano, Gaspar Lopez Homem and Mayor Rodriguez; lived in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. In order to escape the Inquisition, Maria, with her brother Manuel Lopez and her uncle Miguel Lopez, determined to emigrate (about 1590-1593). They accordingly sailed for Holland, but their vessel was captured by an English ship, the captain of which, an English nobleman (thought possibly to be Sir. Walter Raleigh), was so enamored of Maria's beauty that he proposed marriage. In London the comment upon her unusual beauty excited the curiosity even of Queen Elizabeth, who summoned Maria to her presence and drove with her through the streets of the capital. Maria persistently rejected all proposals of marriage, even from persons of rank, and asked only that she and her companions be allowed to continue their journey to Holland. Finally she arrived safely in Amsterdam, where she was soon joined by her mother, and by her brother and sister, Antonio and Justa. Maria and her sister, Abigail (Justa) married their cousins Manuel Lopez Homem and Francisco Nuñez Pereyra respectively; the latter (died 14 Feb 1625, in Amsterdam) adopted the name of David Abendana. Their mother, Mayor Rodriguez, otherwise known as Sara Abendana, died was buried 16 Sep 1624. - (from The Jewish Encyclopedia)

Antonio 'Pedro' HOMEM (LOPES PEREIRA) alias Joseph ISRAEL PEREIRA was probably the father of Abraham ISRAEL PEREIRA.
