- Fernão da Orta, was a Spanish Jew from Valencia de Alcántara, who had emigrated to Castelo de vide in Portugal in 1492. He
belonged to the group of Jews who were baptized after Dom Manuel’s decree in 1497. The descendants of those converted Jews were called marranos (pigs) or cristãos novos (New Christians).
