Ellen Esther de Castro
Born 24 February 1867 in New Orleans, Louisiana; died 21 November 1935 in Charleston, South Carolina. She married Henry Jacob Williams 08 March 1899 in Savannah, Georgia
NOTES: Jacob Osorio de Castro and his wife Hannah de Sola de Castro married on St. Thomas in 1852 and moved to St. Croix shortly thereafter. Their first child, Grace was born on that island in 1854. They left the island because of a cholera epidemic. They sailed for New Orleans, Louisiana, probably by way of Galveston, Texas. They arrived in New Orleans prior to 1859 and the start of the Civil War. They came to New Orleans because Jacob's brother Isaac Osorio de Castro lived in the city.
In New Orleans, Jacob was in the tobacco business with his brother Isaac. He was at one point the president of the Spanish-Portuguese Synagogue, which merged with the Tuoro Synagogue. Jacob de Castro was a Mason, Master of the Lodge.
Jacob and Hannah's second daughter Alice Zipporah de Castro was born in 1859 in New Orleans. A third child, their only son, David Jefferson de Castro was born in November, 1861. David was named for his paternal grandfather, following Jewish tradition. However, his middle name appears to be in honor of the President of the Confederacy, Jefferson Davis. How interesting for such a recent immigrant to do so. David Jefferson de Castro died at age 11 months in October 1862 during the Civil War. At the time of his death, Hannah was pregnant again, with daughter Clara who was born and died on March 9, 1863. Was she stillborn or did she die shortly after birth?
At the start of the Civil War, Jacob enlisted in the New Orleans Home Guard. According to author Shelby Foote in The Civil War, at that time, New Orleans had approximately 200,000 citizens. On April 24, 1862, New Orleans fell to the Northern troops. Their naval troops were commanded by Farragut. The military ruler of New Orleans, General Ben Butler ordered Jacob to take an oath of allegiance to the North. He refused and took refuge in Mobile, Alabama. It is unknown what year it was when he fled to Mobile, although General Butler only served in New Orleans until December of 1862. Did he leave shortly after the death of his son David in October 1862? How long did he stay in Mobile? Did he return to New Orleans in time for the birth of his daughter Clara? Were the deaths of these two children related to the occupation of New Orleans by the North?
DE CASTRO, JOSEPH H.
Rank and organization: Corporal, Company I, 19th Massachusetts Infantry. Place and date: At Gettysburg, Pa., 3 July 1863. Entered service at:------. Birth: Boston, Mass. Date of issue: 1 December 1864. Citation: Capture of flag of 19th Virginia regiment (C.S.A.).
Four years after the death of Clara de Castro, and two years after the conclusion of the Civil War, a daughter was born to Hannah and Jacob. Ellen de Castro was born February 24, 1867.
It appears the family moved to Savannah, Georgia in 1878 At that time, there was a yellow fever epidemic raging through New Orleans. Eldest daughter Grace and her husband Isaac Pereira Mendes moved to Savannah when he was appointed Rabbi of Congregation Mikve Israel. Ellen could have been 11 years old at that time. It was in Savannah that Ellen de Castro grew up and eventually married Henry Jacob Williams on March 9, 1899.
NOTES:Hannah de Sola was confirmed in St. Thomas in 1844. The certificate of confirmation reads: "I Benjamin Cohen Carillion, minister of the Israelitish congregation on the Island, certify that on Sabbath, 5604, corresponding with the 13th of April, 1844, I confirmed Hannad deSola, daughter of Isaac haim deSola and Zipporah de Solah, born Hoheb. The said person is consequently duly accepted as a member of the Synagogue, and is entitled to all the rights and benefits thereof." St. Thomas at that time was still in the possession of Denmark.

NOTES: Isaac Osorio de Castro left the islands and moved to New Orleans, Louisiana. The exact date is unknown, but it is prior to 1859. Isaac was already established in New Orleans when his brother Jacob Osorio de Castro moved his family to New Orleans from St. Croix. There was a cholera epidemic in St. Thomas in 1855 which must have spread to St. Croix shortly after. That is assumed to be the impetus for Jacob Osorio de Castro to move his family away from the islands to join his brother in New Orleans. New information from Ellen Cleary in New Orleans has filled in the descendants of Isaac. His two eldest daughters Grace and Clara married and had families. The six remaining children never married and/or died young.

His ancestry dates back to the Spanish Inquisition. His ancestor was taken to the border of Spain by a Cardinal de Sourdes to prevent massacre. Out of gratitude, he changed his name to de Sourdes which remained the family name. J. de S Freund lived in Pittsburgh in 1953, but Sita Likuski was unable to track him down recently.
