  Circumcised by his Uncle Isaac Semach Aboad. Jewish Books at Auction. The Circulation of Knowledge as Reflected in the Catalogues of Jewish Private Libraries in the Dutch Republic (1637-1832). By Anna E. de Wilde Extracto In 1782, a 174-page catalogue was made for the sale of the belongings left by the well-known collector Judah de Benjamin Senior (d. 1782), “beminnaar der kunsten en wetenschappen” (lover of the arts and sciences). (65) Christian book- and art seller Jan Willem Smit printed the catalogue and organised the sale, that was held in his shop over the course of four days. The catalogue is written in Dutchand contains hundreds of (uncut) printed plays, many paintings and illustrations, sheet music and musical instruments, coins, and a total of 1,271 books. The catalogue includes a separate category for the 103 Hebrew books and a separate category for the fifty-eight Spanish Jewish books. Interestingly, multiple copies of the same works are listed, such as various Hebrew and Spanish prayer books. Had his family been using these books or had they been read within a communal setting?
